Better structure. Clearer understanding.

The better the structure of the data, the better AI can understand what a business does and what it can offer. A name and an address show where a business is. Facilities, services, policies and suitability need the same clear definitions.

For AI

Consistent attributes and definitions show what a business does and what it offers, so an assistant can explain the business from the record.

For people

Find a business from the details that match what you need.

For businesses

Control the description of the business, and keep services and facilities accurate for people and for software.

How a category schema is made

Different types of businesses need different information. Each category follows the same three stages.

  1. 2.1

    Discover

We identify the information that matters for each type of business, from facilities and services to customer experiences.

  2. 2.2

    Structure

We organise this information into clear, consistent business schemas, using established standards where possible.

  3. 2.3

    Improve

Business owners can help complete and confirm their information, making profiles more accurate and useful.

Principles of the register

  1. Persistent identifiers

Every business receives one persistent identifier, shared across categories, so the same business is never described twice.

  2. Recorded provenance

Important attributes keep their source, date and verification status alongside the value.

  3. Claims kept distinct

Information supplied by a business, independently verified facts and derived observations are recorded separately and never merged.

  4. Reviews ask, sources answer

Customer reviews help identify the questions people ask. They are not treated as verified facts.

  5. Independence

Payment never confers verified status or influences an independent assessment.

  6. Established vocabulary

Schema.org terms are used where suitable. Additional fields are defined, documented and versioned.

Every business deserves a digital identity it can control.

Claim it. Complete it. Verify it. Maintain it. Businesses know their services and facilities better than anyone. Schema.org.uk aims to make it easier for an owner to hold that record and keep it accurate.

  1. Claim it

Hold the record of what the business is.

  2. Complete it

Add the services and facilities people ask about.

  3. Verify it

Confirm what is stated. A missing value stays unknown.

  4. Maintain it

Change the record when the business changes.

Status and independence

Schema.org.uk is an independent project. It is not the official Schema.org site. It uses Schema.org vocabulary where applicable.

The schemas describe information shared across kinds of UK businesses. Hotels, dentists, hairdressers, beauty salons, vineyards, restaurants, theatres, cafes, pubs, vehicle repair shops, electricians, and plumbers are published examples, not the limit. Consumer sites that use this information are separate from these pages.
